Earthquake in Haiti on The Big Picture

Some of my favorite shots — the photos that give me goosebumps — of the earthquake aftermath are the shots of foreign governments, no matter how big — the U.S. and U.K. — or small — the Republic of China — lining up, without question, to rush to Haiti and help.

Welcoming 2010

Fireworks light the sky in front of Mayon Volcano during New Year’s celebrations in Legazpi city, Albay province, south of Manila January 1, 2010. Mayon Volcano, known for its near-perfect cone shape in the coconut-growing central Bicol region, has been spewing ash and burning mud and rocks for more than two weeks.

Well, there’s nothing like a volcano spewing lava to motivate a New Year’s celebration.

Bangarang.

Video for my track ‘Bangarang’. This piece is composed of sounds from the Spielberg classic film ‘Hook’, a sine wave bass, and a few cymbals for extra spice.

This guy’s a gold mine. Absolutely fantastic.

Shibumi.

The Japanese have concept called shibumi, which is a simple beauty without flashiness. It’s a thought that translates well to men’s clothing, for the best dress is also simple, and without flash.

Via Radiolab, Musical Language

We’ll kick off the chase with Diana Deutsch, a professor specializing in the Psychology of Music, who could extract song out even the most monotonous of drones. (Think Ben Stein in Ferris Bueller. Bueller.)

The Senate Majority Leader’s Oh-No Vote

It was the pinnacle moment of his political career. The majority leader of the United States Senate, Harry Reid of Nevada, on the verge of making history by shepherding through landmark health care legislation, was called upon by the clerk to cast his vote.

70-Minute Video Review of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

Some guy named Mike from Milwaukee, WI put together a 70-minute video review discussing the many reasons why the movie was horrible. And this isn’t your usual fanboy rant, this is an epic, well-edited well-constructed piece of geek film criticism. In fact, the way I learned about the video was from Lost co-creator and Star Trek producer Damon Lindelof, who said “Your life is about to change. This is astounding film making.

At a Mine’s Bottom, Hints of Dark Matter

An international team of physicists working in the bottom of an old iron mine in Minnesota said Thursday that they might have registered the first faint hints of a ghostly sea of subatomic particles known as dark matter long thought to permeate the cosmos. …

Gordon Kane, a physicist from the University of Michigan, called the results “inconclusive, sadly,” adding, “It seems likely it is dark matter detection, but no proof.”
